Terry Jacks
1944년 캐나다 출생으로 어려서 부터 작곡과 편곡을 공부하여 기초를 다진 다음, 무명 그룹
'더 체스맨'을 거쳐, "Evergreen"이란 노래로 유명한 Susan Jacks와 결혼하여 부부 듀오
"The Poppy Family"를 결성하여 주목을 받기 시작 했습니다. 이 때 발표한 "Which You Way
Goin' Billy"라는 싱글로 1969년 챠트 1위에 오르기도 했다. 1973년 수잔과 이혼한 그는 솔로
독립하고, 1974년 앨범 "Terry Jacks"를 발표하여 "Seasons In The Sun"과 "If You Go
Away"가 크게 히트를 했습니다.
Seasons In The Sun
제목만 봐서는 얼핏 햇빛이 찬란한 봄이나 여름의 밝은 내용일 것 같지만, 가사 내용은 정반대입니다.
한 남자가 젊은 시절을 술과 향락 속에 헛되이 살아온 날들을 후회하며, 아버지와 친구,그리고사랑했던 여자에게 작별을 고하는 내용입니다. 어디로 떠나는 작별이 아니라 삶을 마감하며,
이 세상과 작별을 고하는 이 때가 밝은 태양이 찬란한 봄이서 죽기가 너무 괴롭다는 이야기 입니다.
원래 이 곡은 벨기에 출신 시인이자 작곡가인 Jacques Brel 이 1961년도에 "Le Moribond" (The Dying Man)라는 제목으로 프랑스어로 씌워진 곡이었습니다. 이 곡을 1964년 Rod McKuen이 영어로 번역하고, Bob Shane이 영어로 첫 녹음하였답니다. 1974년 Terry Jacks가그의 앨범 [Terry Jacks]에 수록되어 "If You Go Away'와 함께 이 곡은 대단한 인기를 얻으면서밀리언 셀러를 기록하였는데, 이 덕분에 이 해는 그에게 최고의 해가 되었습니다.
