It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;-
And this maiden she lived with no other
thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more
than love-
I and my Annabel Lee-
With a love that the winged seraphs in Heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her high-born kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me:-
Yes!-that was the reason
(as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud, by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But out love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in Heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee-
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, - my darling, - my life and my bride,
In her sepulcher there by the sea-

아주 오래고 오랜 옛날 일이었지요.
바닷가 한 왕국에 애너벨 리라고 불리우는
한 아가씨가 살고 있었답니다.
그 아가씨는 나를 사랑하고 내게 사랑받는 것 외에는
아무 다른 생각 없이 살았습니다.
나도 아이였고, 그녀 또한 아이었습니다.
바닷가 왕국에서,
그러나 우리는 사랑 이상의 사랑으로 사랑했습니다.
나와 나의 애너벨 리는-하늘을 나는 치천사(熾天使)도
그녀와 나를 부러워했던 사랑으로 말입니다.
그 때문이었습니다.
오래 전에, 바닷가 이 왕국에서,
구름으로부터 바람이 불어
나의 아름다운 애너벨 리를 싸늘히 얼게 한 것을
그래서 그녀의 지체 높은 친척들이 와서
그녀를 내 곁에서 데려가 바닷가 이 왕국에 있는
무덤에 가두어 버렸습니다.
천상에서는 우리보다 결코 행복하지 못 던
천사들이 늘 그녀와 나를 시기 했습니다.
그렇지요 .! 바로 그 때문이였습니다.

밤사이 구름에서 바람이 불어와
나의 애너벨 리를 싸늘히 얼려 죽인 것은
그러나 . 우리의 사랑. 그것은 훨씬 더 강했었지요.
우리보다 나이 많은 이들의 사랑보다도
우리보다 훨씬 지혜로운 많은 이들의 사랑보다도-
위로는 천상의 천사들도
밑으로는 바다밑의 악마들까지도
내 영혼을 아름다운 애나벨 리의 영혼으로부터 떼어 놓을수는 없었습니다.
그래서 달빛 흐를 때 언제나 내 꿈속엔
아름다운 애나벨 리의 모습이 나타나고
별들이 떠오르면 언제나 나는
애나벨 리의 찬란한 눈빛을 느낍니다.
그래서 밤새 나는 누워 있는 것이지요.
내 사랑. 아- 내 사랑. 내 생명. 내 신부 곁에.

Edgar A. Poe -1809~1849 미국의 시인·소설가·비평가
보스턴에서 태어났다. 17세에 버지니아 대학에 입학하였으나 1년도 못되어 퇴학당하였으며, 그 후 군대에 들어가 한때, 웨스트포인트 육군사관학교를 다니기도 하였다.
그는 <검은 고양이><모르그가의 살인사건>등의 단편 소설을 통하여 오싹한 전율 과 공포를 예술적으로 표현하였고, 근대 추리소설을 개척한 작가이며, 시인으로서도 널리 알려져 있다.
그의 작품들은 보들레르, 말라르메 등에 의하여 유럽에 번역되어 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 그의 일생은 매우 불행하였으나 미국이 낳은 최고의 작가로 손꼽힌다.
그 밖의 작품으로는 <황금 풍뎅이>< 리지아><붉은 죽음의 가면><어셔가의 몰락> <갈 까마귀> <애너벨리> 등이 있다.
