잠언4장
1 내가 다시 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 학대를 살펴 보았도다 보라 학대 받는 자들의 눈물이로다 그들에게 위로자가 없도다 그들을 학대하는 자들의 손에는 권세가 있으나 그들에게는 위로자가 없도다
Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: saw the tears of the oppressed-and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors-and they have no comforter.
2 그러므로 나는 아직 살아 있는 산 자들보다 죽은 지 오랜 죽은 자들을 더 복되다 하였으며
And I declared that the dead, who had already died, are happier than the living, who are still alive.
3 이 둘보다도 아직 출생하지 아니하여 해 아래에서 행하는 악한 일을 보지 못한 자가 더 복되다 하였노라
But better than both is he who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
4 내가 또 본즉 사람이 모든 수고와 모든 재주로 말미암아 이웃에게 시기를 받으니 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다
And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
5 우매자는 팔짱을 끼고 있으면서 자기의 몸만 축내는도다
The fool folds his hands and ruins himself.
6 두 손에 가득하고 수고하며 바람을 잡는 것보다 한 손에만 가득하고 평온함이 더 나으니라
Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.
7 내가 또 다시 해 아래에서 헛된 것을 보았도다
Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:
8 어떤 사람은 아들도 없고 형제도 없이 홀로 있으나 그의 모든 수고에는 끝이 없도다 또 비록 그의 눈은 부요를 족하게 여기지 아니하면서 이르기를 내가 누구를 위하여는 이같이 수고하고 나를 위하여는 행복을 누리지 못하게 하는가 하여도 이것도 헛되어 불행한 노고로다
There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth."For whom am I toiling," he asked, "and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?" This too is meaningless-a miserable business!
9 두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은 그들이 수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것임이라
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:
10 혹시 그들이 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 붙들어 일으키려니와 홀로 있어 넘어지고 붙들어 일으킬 자가 없는 자에게는 화가 있으리라
If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!
11 또 두 사람이 함께 누우면 따뜻하거니와 한 사람이면 어찌 따뜻하랴
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
12 한 사람이면 패하겠거니와 두 사람이면 맞설 수 있나니 세 겹 줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 아니하느니라
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
13 가난하여도 지혜로운 젊은이가 늙고 둔하여 경고를 더 받을 줄 모르는 왕보다 나으니
Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take warning.
14 그는 자기의 나라에서 가난하게 태어났을지라도 감옥에서 나와 왕이 되었음이니라
The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom.
15 내가 본즉 해 아래에서 다니는 인생들이 왕의 다음 자리에 있다가 왕을 대신하여 일어난 젊은이와 함께 있고
I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king's successor.
16 그의 치리를 받는 모든 백성들이 무수하였을지라도 후에 오는 자들은 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리니 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다
There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
