Origin of Love
When the earth was still flat,
And the clouds made of fire,
And mountains stretched up to the sky,
Sometimes higher,
Folks roamed the earth
Like big rolling kegs.
They had two sets of arms.
They had two sets of legs.
They had two faces peering
Out of one giant head
So they could watch all around them
As they talked; while they read.
And they never knew nothing of love.
It was before the origin of love.

And there were three sexes then,
One that looked like two men
Glued up back to back,
Called the children of the sun.
And similar in shape and girth
Were the children of the earth.
They looked like two girls
Rolled up in one.
And the children of the moon
Were like a fork shoved on a spoon.
They were part sun, part earth
Part daughter, part son.

Now the gods grew quite scared
Of our strength and defiance
And Thor said,
"I'm gonna kill them all
With my hammer,
Like I killed the giants."
And Zeus said, "No,
You better let me
Use my lightening, like scissors,
Like I cut the legs off the whales
And dinosaurs into lizards."
Then he grabbed up some bolts
And he let out a laugh,
Said, "I'll split them right down the middle.
Gonna cut them right up in half."
And then storm clouds gathered above
Into great balls of fire
And then fire shot down
From the sky in bolts
Like shining blades
Of a knife.
And it ripped
Right through the flesh
Of the children of the sun
And the moon
And the earth.
And some Indian god
Sewed the wound up into a hole,
Pulled it round to our belly
To remind us of the price we pay.
And Osiris and the gods of the Nile
Gathered up a big storm
To blow a hurricane,
To scatter us away,
In a flood of wind and rain,
And a sea of tidal waves,
To wash us all away,
And if we don't behave
They'll cut us down again
And we'll be hopping round on one foot
And looking through one eye.
Last time I saw you
We had just split in two.
You were looking at me.
I was looking at you.
You had a way so familiar,
But I could not recognize,
Cause you had blood on your face;
I had blood in my eyes.
But I could swear by your expression
That the pain down in your soul
Was the same as the one down in mine.
That's the pain,

세상이 평평하고
구름은 불로 만들어졌고
산들은 하늘까지, 때로는 하늘 보다 높게 서있었을 때,
인류는 지구 위를 커다란 통처럼 굴러다녔어.
그들은 팔이 네 개, 다리가 네 개였지.
거인 같은 머리에는 얼굴이 두 개였어.
그래서 그들은 주변에 모든 것을 다 볼 수가 있었어.
그들이 말을 하고, 읽을 수 있게되자.
사랑을 알아버린 거야.
그것이 사랑의 시초야.

그때는 성(性)이 3개가 있었지.
서로 등을 마주대고
태양의 아이라는 이름을 가진 두 남자 같이 생긴 성(性)
생김새와 허리둘레가 같은
지구의 아이라는 이름을 가지고 굴러다니는
두 여자 같이 생긴 성(性).
그리고 달의 아이라 불리어진
스푼에 삐죽 꽂힌 포크 같은
반은 태양이고 반은 지구인
반은 딸이고 반은 아들인 그런 성(性).
그것이 사랑의 시초가 되었지.
신들은 우리의 힘과 도전에 겁을 먹기 시작했어.
토르 신이 말했지.
“나의 이 망치로 인간들을 모두 죽여버리겠어.
내가 거인을 죽였을 때처럼.”
그러자 제우스가 말했어.
“안돼. 대신 내가 번개를 사용할 수 있게 해주게나.
가위처럼 고래와 공룡의 다리를 잘라 도마뱀으로 만들었듯이.”
제우스는 웃음을 터뜨리더니 말했지.
“내가 그들 가운데를 좍 갈라서 반으로 쪼개 버릴 테다.”
그러더니 폭풍구름을 몰고 와서 커다란 불덩어리로 만들었지.
그러자 하늘에서 불이 떨어지고
날카로운 칼날처럼
태양의 아이와
달의 아이와
지구의 아이의 살 가운데로 떨어졌어.
그리고 어느 인도의 신이 구멍을 꿰매서
우리의 배에다 묶어버렸어.
우리의 죄 값을 기억하라고.
오시리스와 나일강의 신들은
폭풍을 모아서 허리케인은 불러와서
우릴 여기저기 흩어버렸어.
바람과 비가 넘쳐 나고
바다의 파도가 밀려와 우리를 쓸어버렸어.
믿을 수 없지만 신들이 우리를 갈라놓은 거야.
우리는 다시 한 발로 깡충 거리고 뛰어 다녀야 하고
한 눈으로만 보는 신세가 되었어.
지난번 내가 당신을 보았을 때
우리는 둘로 갈라진 채였어.
당신이 날 보았을 때
나도 당신을 보았지.
당신이 너무나 낯이 익더군.
그러나 내가 어찌 알아차릴 수 있겠어.
당신 얼굴에 피가 묻혀있고
내 눈에도 피가 있는데.
그렇지만 난 당신 표정으로 알 수 있었어.
당신 영혼에 자리잡은 영혼이
나의 고통과 같은 것이란 것을.
우리를 하나로 잘라버린.
우리의 심장을 관통한 그 고통이란 것을.
우린 그것을 사랑이라 부르지.
그래서 우린 서로 포옹을 했지.
서로의 등을 떼밀면서.
우린 사랑을 했지.
오래 전 춥고 어두운 밤이었어.
제우스의 엄청난 손에 의해,
우리가 외로운 두 다리의 피조물이 되어버렸는지
참 슬픈 이야기야.
사랑의 시초의 이야기지.
그것이 사랑의 시초야.
